Tired of the Health Insurance Labyrinth?

Shopping for health insurance on your own is overwhelming. Fill out one form online, and your phone immediately blows up with relentless sales calls. Try to research on your own, and you’re buried under technical jargon, restricted networks, and surprise deductibles.
The whole system is built to overwhelm you into staying wherever you already are, or into buying whatever pops up first on Google.
I do it differently.
I’ll walk you through what actually matters for your situation and I’ll help you pick a plan you understand before you enroll in it.

Who I help with health insurance

Most of my health insurance clients fall into one of these situations.

You’re turning 26 and rolling off your parents’ plan.

You’ve got 60 days from your birthday to get coverage. The marketplace is confusing. Your parents are asking questions you can’t answer. And random insurance agents keep calling you. I’ll walk you through what’s real, what’s spam, and which plan actually makes sense for a healthy 26-year-old just starting out.

You just went self-employed or freelance.

You left corporate coverage behind and COBRA quoted you something painful. You’re trying to figure out if the marketplace, a private plan, or a health share is the right move. It’s more common than you think, and there are more options than you’ve been told.

You’re between jobs or laid off.

Whether you got a severance package with 60 or 90 days of coverage or nothing at all, you have options besides COBRA. Special enrollment periods, short-term plans, marketplace subsidies you might qualify for now that you weren’t eligible for before. I’ll help you figure out the fastest path to coverage without overpaying.

You’re a family shopping the marketplace.

You want a plan that covers your pediatrician, doesn’t gut your paycheck, and won’t leave you exposed if a real medical event happens.

Health Insurance Solutions
Tailored to Your Life Stage

ACA Marketplace Plans (Healthcare.gov)

Individual and family plans available through the federal marketplace. These are the plans most people mean when they say “Obamacare.” They come in metal tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) and may qualify you for subsidies based on your income.

Best For: Individuals and families looking for comprehensive coverage with potential government premium subsidies based on household income.
Key Benefit: Guarantees coverage for pre-existing conditions and essential health benefits without medical underwriting.
A joyful family spending quality time together in a green park on a sunny day.
Smiling store owner in brown apron standing at entrance, welcoming customers.

Self-Employed & Freelancer Health Plans

Some carriers offer plans that aren’t listed on the marketplace. Sometimes these have better networks, better prices, or benefits the marketplace plans don’t include.

Best For: Small business owners, consultants, and independent contractors who need dedicated, portable health coverage not tied to an employer.
Key Benefit: Custom-fit policies that shield your hard-earned income from catastrophic medical bills.

Career Transitions, COBRA Alternatives, & Turning 26

If you have a coverage gap, between jobs, between plans, waiting for a new job’s benefits to kick in, short-term plans can bridge you for a few months. They’re not right for everyone (they don’t cover pre-existing conditions and have real limitations), but for the right situation they’re a smart, affordable option.

Best For: Anyone transitioning between corporate jobs, leaving group benefits, or aging off family coverage.
Key Benefit: Unlocks Special Enrollment Periods so you don’t suffer gaps in coverage or pay overpriced COBRA premiums.

Dental, Vision, & Supplemental Coverage

Standalone dental and vision plans, or add-ons to your main health coverage. Accident, hospital indemnity, and critical illness plans that pay you cash if something serious happens. These aren’t replacements for real health insurance. Useful for high-deductible plan holders.

Best For: Rounding out your medical coverage with routine dental care, vision exams, glasses, and accident/critical illness buffers.
Key Benefit: Help you save in case of high deductibles and supplement current insurance.

Flexible, Nationwide Freedom:
Private PPO Health Plans

Want freedom of doctor choice without being locked into restrictive local HMO networks?

Private PPO plans offer flexible health coverage designed for self-employed professionals, healthy individuals, and growing families who want reliable protection and nationwide network access. Private PPO plans are off-marketplace health insurance through top-rated carriers.

What you should know:
Private PPO plans usually cost more per month than a comparable marketplace plan without subsidies. The trade-off is broader access, fewer restrictions, and often stronger out-of-network coverage. I’ll help you compare a private PPO against your marketplace options side by side so you can see the real trade-off in dollars and coverage.

Nationwide Specialist Access

See your preferred doctors, specialists, and hospital systems anywhere in the country without needing referrals.

Year-Round Enrollment

Apply whenever you need coverage, no waiting for the annual ACA Open Enrollment window.

Cost-Effective Premiums

Lock in lower monthly rates if you are healthy, ensuring you only pay for the protection you actually need.

What about pre-existing conditions?

For ACA-compliant health insurance, carriers cannot deny you coverage or charge you more based on pre-existing conditions.
That covers marketplace plans and most private individual plans. Diabetes, cancer history, mental health treatment, past surgeries, none of it disqualifies you from coverage or raises your rate.
The one exception is short-term health insurance. Short-term plans can exclude pre-existing conditions, which is why they only work for people who are relatively healthy and just need bridge coverage.

If you’ve been told you’re “uninsurable”, you’re not. Let’s talk.

★★★★★

“I generally detest having to shop for health insurance. It just is not fun and isn’t the sexy kind of shopping, but Jeff was a pleasure, had useful tips and pointers, and ultimately suggested a plan that will work for me and my partner.“

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I enroll in health insurance?

Open Enrollment for marketplace and most individual plans runs from November 1 through January 15 in Texas. Outside that window, you need a Qualifying Life Event to enroll, like losing job-based coverage, getting married, having a baby, moving, or aging off a parent’s plan at 26. If you have a Qualifying Life Event, you usually have 60 days to enroll in a new plan.

How much does health insurance cost?

It depends on your age, income, location, family size, and the plan you choose. If you qualify for ACA subsidies based on your income, your monthly cost can drop significantly, sometimes to near zero. I’ll model your actual costs based on your situation before you commit to anything.

Do I qualify for subsidies?

Possibly. Subsidy eligibility is based on your household income and family size relative to the federal poverty level. Many people who assume they make too much to qualify actually do. And the rules changed in recent years to make more people eligible than before, so it’s always worth checking.

Can I switch health insurance outside of Open Enrollment?

Only if you have a Qualifying Life Event, losing a job, getting married, having a baby, moving, or aging off a parent’s plan. You usually have 60 days from the event. If none of those apply, you’ll likely need to wait for Open Enrollment in the fall.

Do you cover pre-existing conditions?

For ACA-compliant plans, yes, carriers can’t deny you or charge more based on pre-existing conditions. For short-term plans, no, those can exclude pre-existing conditions, which is why they only work as bridge coverage for healthy people.

What’s a deductible, and how do I pick the right one?

Your deductible is what you pay out of pocket before your insurance starts sharing costs.

Higher deductible = lower monthly premium, but more you pay if something happens. Lower deductible = higher monthly premium, but less exposure when you need care.

The right pick depends on your health, your savings, and how much medical care you typically need. I’ll help you think it through.

Will my doctors be covered?

I check before you enroll. Send me the names of your primary care doctor, any specialists you see regularly, and any prescriptions you take. I verify they’re in-network before recommending a plan. This is the step most agents skip.

Can I keep my current doctor?

Maybe. Every plan has a specific network of doctors and hospitals. Some plans include your doctor, some don’t. This is why I verify your providers before recommending a plan.

What if I’m self-employed?

Self-employed folks and 1099 contractors have several options: ACA marketplace plans (often with subsidies), private off-marketplace plans, health sharing ministries, or a spouse’s employer plan if that applies. You have more options than you think you do or have been told you do.

What’s the difference between HMO, PPO, and EPO?

HMO requires you to pick a primary care doctor and get referrals for specialists, usually cheaper but less flexible.
PPO lets you see any provider in a broader network without referrals, more flexible, usually more expensive.
EPO is a hybrid, no referrals needed, but you have to stay in-network.
Which one fits depends on your doctors, your family situation, and how much flexibility you value.

What about Medicare?

Medicare is its own world with its own rules, and I don’t specialize in it. If you’re turning 65 or already on Medicare and need help, I can refer you to a Medicare specialist I trust who handles that side of things.

How long does the process take?

Most health insurance applications process within a few days to a couple of weeks. Coverage can sometimes start as soon as the first of the following month. If you need coverage fast, short-term plans can activate within days.

Does it cost extra to use Jeff as my health insurance agent?

No. Health insurance rates are regulated by law. You pay the exact same monthly premium whether you buy directly through a carrier, use Health.gov, or work with an independent agent. My guidance, network verification, and ongoing support come at no extra cost to you.

Why choose an independent agent over buying online or from a big brand?

Captive agents and online forms sell one single product line. As an independent broker, I can shop multiple top-rated carriers on your behalf, giving you objective advice, better price comparisons, and direct local support.
