Employee Benefits for Small Businesses in Austin Texas
Strategic Small Business Employee Benefits in Austin, TX
Attract and retain top talent with competitive health and life plans. Competitive group health and life insurance for teams of 1 to 50. Built around your budget and handled without the headache.
Small business benefits shouldn’t feel this hard.
Big benefit brokers focus on companies with 500+ employees. HR platforms sell software you don’t have time to learn. And solo agents disappear the second the paperwork gets complicated.
I get that, which is why at The Lambert Agency, I work differently.
Why Business Owners Reach Out To Me
Managing employee benefits can quickly feel like a full-time job. Most business owners with 1-50 employees reach out to me when they hit one of three specific situations:
Hit with a Steep Renewal Rate Increase
You’re already offering coverage, but your carrier just hiked the rates. You need more affordable options that still feel high-value to your team.
First Time Offering Group Coverage
You want a solid, professional benefits package that helps you recruit and keep good people. But you aren’t sure where to start.
Your Current Agent Isn’t Responsive
You’re tired of waiting days for an email reply or phone call. You want clear communication, reliable follow-up, and a dedicated broker.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many employees do I need to qualify for group coverage?
You only need 2 or more non-owner employees to qualify for a group health insurance plan. Some carriers have a minimum of five, but plenty of plans are available for groups as small as two.
How much does a group health plan cost per employee?
Costs vary widely based on your team’s demographics, the plan structure, and how much of the premium you cover as the employer. A rough range for Austin small businesses is $400 to $800 per employee per month for solid coverage, but I’d need to know your specifics to give you a real number. I’ll model exact costs on our first call so you know exactly what you are getting into and that it makes sense.
What is the difference between fully insured and level-funded plans?
Fully insured plans charge a fixed monthly premium regardless of how much healthcare your team uses. Level-funded plans offer predictable monthly payments, but if your team’s claims are low, your business can receive a refund or credit at the end of the policy year, giving small businesses corporate-style savings.
Do I have to cover 100% of my employees’ premiums?
No. Most small business owners cover between 50% and 75% of the employee premium. Some cover more, some cover less. The right number depends on your budget and what your competitors offer.
What about dependents, do I have to cover them too?
No, and most small businesses don’t. Typically the employer covers a portion of the employee premium and lets employees pay for dependent coverage themselves at group rates.
Can I offer different benefits to different employees?
Yes, within limits. You can create “employee classes”, for example, full-time vs part-time, or executives vs staff, and offer different benefit levels to each. The rules are strict, but there’s flexibility if it’s set up correctly.
Do you handle the ACA compliance stuff?
Yes. I take care of the reporting, guidance on employer mandate requirements (which apply if you have 50+ full-time equivalent employees), and the paperwork that goes along with offering benefits. You get clean compliance without hiring an HR person.
What happens when we hire a new employee?
Send me their information and I handle the enrollment. Same for when someone leaves, I handle the off-boarding paperwork including COBRA if it applies.
How do renewals work?
About 90 days before your renewal date, I start shopping the market. I bring you a comparison of your current plan versus alternatives, model out cost changes, and give you a real recommendation. You’re never stuck with an unexplained rate hike.
Can we switch group insurance plans outside of the annual renewal window?
Yes. In many cases, if you are experiencing steep rate increases or severe service issues with your current broker, we can help you transition to a new carrier or plan structure mid-year.
Can my employees ask you questions directly?
Yes. That’s the whole point. Your employees have my direct line for anything benefits-related, enrollment questions, claims issues, ID card problems, whatever comes up.
How much administrative work will my team have to do?
Minimal. We handle the enrollment setup, employee onboarding materials, carrier submission, and ACA compliance details so you don’t need to hire extra HR staff.
Does it cost more to hire an independent broker like The Lambert Agency?
No. Group insurance rates are set by the carriers and regulated by the state. You pay the exact same price using our dedicated guidance and enrollment management as you would going direct—our expertise comes at no added cost to your company.
Do you work with businesses outside Austin?
Austin is home, but I work with clients across Texas and in some cases outside Texas.
